Special Issue: Novel Sensor Systems for Earth Observation

Affordable and low-cost sensors on break-out boards that easily interface with low-power consumption microcontrollers (e.g. Arduinos) and computers (e.g. Raspberry Pi) have inspired many a scientist to build experimental novel sensor systems for Earth observation. But also commercially available sensors often require some innovative ideas to integrate them into a sensor system that can be easily used in various aspects of Earth observation. Often, however, researchers are faced with the problem that it is not easy to establish such novel systems in the scientific literature before a full-fledged application can be carried out. For this special issue of DIE ERDE we thus also welcome papers reporting on pilot studies with a minimum proof-of-concept field deployment of the system. Each contribution should thus provide a geographic application of the sensor system together with the detailed description of the sensors and their integration into the system at a level that would allow readers to assemble their own system. Whenever possible, calibration procedures and calibration experience, preferably in comparison with state-of-the-art commercial sensors should be included in the paper.
Manuscripts may be submitted until end of February 2022 for this special issues. Delayed manuscripts may still be considered, but may be printed as stand-alone articles in a later issue of DIE ERDE than the special issue, which should tentatively be in press by end of June 2022.
